5 Lucky Charms for Relocation

In a nod to St. Patrick’s Day, let’s take a look at five ways to bring good luck when relocating.

Whether you take them seriously or not, there are many superstitions about moving into a new home. In a nod to St. Patrick’s Day, let’s take a look at five ways to bring good luck when relocating:

1.  Use the front door. According to Irish tradition, when you enter and exit your new house for the first time, use the front door. It's considered bad luck to use the back door.

2.  Bring in something old. For good luck, include something from your old house, such as a used brick or piece of lumber, if you are building a new home.

3.  Carry in some rice. Throwing rice at a wedding symbolizes a wish for prosperity, which may be the basis for the superstition of bringing uncooked rice with you the first time you enter a new house. Similar superstitions apply to a loaf of bread.

4.  Throw some money at it. Some believe that scattering coins in the living room on the first day in your new house will bring prosperity and good luck.

5.  Spread some salt. Putting a pinch of salt on the front door threshold and on the floor of every room can ward off evil, according to common superstitions. Others say that scattering salt brings out the flavor of life and ensures a happy household.
