Government Affairs Community Update

The latest issue of the Worldwide ERC® (WERC) Government Affairs Community Update addresses several topics, with Tax Reform the leading discussion point. WERC advises that progress on tax reform has slowed while the Senate remains focused on health care. There are no drafts of legislative language that would indicate specifics of a new tax plan, and there are conflicting reports as to the expected timing for a unified plan to be available. Hearings are continuing in advance of the expected August recess.

WERC and the American Moving & Storage Association (AMSA) have submitted a paper in support of retaining the moving expense deduction, citing the positive contribution of this provision to employee mobility and the ability of businesses to organize and locate their workforce effectively. ERC and AMSA are collaborating in support of the moving expense deduction continuing as a component of the tax code.

Additional topics include various State tax matters, International tax updates for Australia and India, an update on Department of Labor request for input on Overtime pay, and a Brexit update.  Also provided is information about the House passing the Choice Act, which would repeal and revise many provisions of Dodd-Frank which could result in changes in regulations governing mortgages,
