Our partners, Dwellworks, provided the following information on the Mexico City automobile restriction policy, Hoy No Circula set forth by the Mexican government. The program aims to improve overall air quality by restricting vehicles permitted on the roadways.
Due to a significant increase in pollution levels, more stringent auto use restrictions will be enforced from April 4th through June 30th, with the possibility of additional restrictions and/or policy continuation after this time period. In addition to the current vehicle use restriction of one Saturday per month, vehicles will now be restricted one additional weekday per week. The day of restricted use is determined by a color decal or the last digit on the vehicle’s license plate. These new restrictions are designed to remove 1 million cars, or approximately 20%, from daily circulation – from delivery trucks to taxis to personal cars – in an effort to reduce pollution.
Impact and Actions
These vehicle restrictions may impact residents and travelers alike and will, therefore, impact mobility support services, including assignee personal travel (i.e., to and from airports and hotels), property-viewing and area orientation appointments, furniture delivery, scheduled property repair and maintenance appointment, and more. The level of impact has yet to be determined; however, we anticipate service–related processes could be slower as well (due to the need to reschedule assignee-related activity based on the vehicle use ban) and the need for flexibility will be greater.
Our Destination Consultants throughout Mexico will communicate with international assignees and advise of the potential impact of delays in services being delivered. We are also proactively researching available options and alternative measures. It is our intent to minimize the impact to assignees during the duration of their orientation and home finding trips; nonetheless, some degree of rescheduling and flexibility will be inevitable to ensure a successful Destination Services experience.
We will continue to monitor and communicate auto restriction policy updates. We appreciate your understanding of this government policy and the need to set client and assignee expectations.
